Auto Meter 3788 Sport-Comp Silver Mini Tachometer Review

This is the no frills version of a tach gauge for a diesel. If your vehicle is old like mine and you don't want to find the innumerable wires that have bad connections for your stock gauge this is a good option. The best part is that it does just strap to the alternator and with a couple of wires to the gauge that's it for the sender. The pipe clamp they give you should be able to strap a semi alternator so be prepared to cut it down to size, that's the only caveat. The fluid filled gauge is definitely worth the extra $, it keeps spikes down to a bare min, down shifting for instance remains very accurate. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the price, although when I bought it the price was less than the previous model: Auto Meter 2888 Performance Series Pedestal Mount Mini Diesel Tachometer. Between the 2 it's the fluid filled gauge that makes the difference. Like all the quality autometer gauges this one is US made (noted because it says nothing about any COO which can be done with American made products only). I say that because the ones they make overseas are not very high quality at all. This gauge also lights up well as it should, it's a small face so it illuminates quite well at night. The small size allows me to put it right behind the steering wheel in front of the gauge cluster and I can still see the stock tach when it decides to function and it's reassuring to know that the autometer is usually a few 100 RPM different. Calibration is not so difficult as to have to take it in to a shop. I was able to calibrate it at about 1600 rpm and then again at 1400.
