Audio Control AudioControl LC8I Line Output Converter - Grey Review

Misleading in the product description here: That "Input for optional subwoofer level control" is actually a knob to control either the level of either a subwoofer, or the level of a connected line-level MP3 input. And it's not optional, the knob is included (as pictured in in the photo). This device has all the benefits of the AudioControl - LC6i - Line Output Converters plus the additional feature of the MP3 input with level control knob.

I have a stock head unit with no aux in and no pre-amp outs; an aftermarket amp which was connected through cheap line level converters; and aftermarket speakers. I didn't want to replace the head unit because I like the stock look and don't want to attract theft since I live in a city. Previously to play music from my iPhone I had been using one of those aftermarket aux in adapters through the CD changer port of the head unit. But I found the sound quality wasn't as good as it could be, and decided it's because the head unit is amplifying and processing the signal before it gets lowered again to go to the amp. It just sounded somewhat harsh, and kind of unpredictable at different volume levels. Whereas CDs and radio sounded somewhat better. At this point I listen to MP3s on my phone, and talk radio on the radio; so I needed both to work, but cared more about the sound quality of the phone. Temporarily plugging my phone directly into the amp confirmed that it did sound better that way; but then you've got no volume control for the phone unless you use the headphone port; and mixing the head unit and phone into the same input of the amp produced weird results, among other reasons because the head unit has 4 channels and the phone only 2.

This device can send the phone's audio directly to the amp's low-level input. It gives you a switch to toggle between that, and the head unit through the device's built-in line level converters. It simply replaces the line level converters from the head unit's high-level outputs to the amp, and has an additional low-level input for the phone.

It turned out to be a great way to improve the phone's sound through the amp, if you can find a good place in your car to mount the knob. Mine went perfectly in a little fold-out drawer in the center console where I can also coil the iPhone cable, so everything is hidden when the drawer is closed. The knob serves as volume control for your iPhone/MP3 player's line out. You press the knob to switch between the phone and the head unit (for when you want to listen to the radio). The device takes care of sending the phone's 2-channel audio to all 4 channels, while preserving the functionality of the front-rear fader knob of the head unit when that's the source. One thing you don't have is any front-rear fader knob when the phone is the source. When the phone is the source you also don't have any base, treble, or balance knobs; but those are adjustable through the phone's settings, plus for me with this new setup flat bass and treble actually sound good.

The device also supports an additional 2 channels for a subwoofer (8i = 4 channels for head unit + 2 channels for iPhone + 2 channels for subwoofer; I think some other configurations are also possible). My only complaint for my application is that I don't have a subwoofer, but you press the knob once to activate the head unit and control the subwoofer level; a second time to activate the iPhone and control its volume; and a third time to activate the iPhone and control the subwoofer level. That third press is useless for me but there's no way to deactivate it. Of course if you do have a subwoofer this would be a good feature.

I'm surprised aftermarket amps don't have this feature (separate MP3 input with a volume knob and switch) built in. This device isn't necessarily overpriced if you can find it on sale, but the installation isn't simple so it could be overkill for that reason. But it's working great, sounds great, and is very convenient to use.
