Deluxe Big Bear Bunk Cot Review
I bought this bunk bed cot to use in our canvas wall tent when we go hunting and/or camping. First of all, I love the space this bought us in our tent. We are a family of five, and we hunt up in the snow. It was great this year to have more room in the tent for hanging out when it got too cold outside. It's also a great feature that they can be broken down into single cots, each with its own bag.The assembly was very straightforward. If you've put the cots together once, you can do it every time after with no instructions. That said, I'm a pretty strong woman and I have a slightly difficult time getting the side rails together inside their pockets. I understand the necessity for a lot of tension to keep the assembled cots sturdy and firm, but it was not easy at all getting those sides together. It was even more difficult for me to get the side rails apart for disassembly. The first time it took me about an hour of straining and using leverage to separate the rails. I was wiped out by the time I got them back in their bags. Now I have my husband handle getting the side rails together and apart because he can do it in moments.
Once the cots are put together they seem pretty sturdy. We had a tall nine year old sleeping on the bottom, and a 160 pound teenager sleeping on the top, and the cots seem to hold up great. The ground was mostly even, but not perfect, and because of this the diagonal cross bars kept coming off. That didn't seem like a big deal, though. The safety bars on top didn't all fit snugly either, but they mostly got the job done...it's not like it would be very fall to far anyway. I don't think the bottom bunk would be very comfortable for anyone over 150 pounds or so. It's not convenient to get in and out of it if you're any bigger than that.
We'll keep these and use them for the kids, and I am pretty happy with them. I'm addicted to the space saving aspect now that we've used them, but I think we'll get the Cabela's disc-o-bed bunk cots for my husband and I. They have much easier assembly and they're much lighter (The Big Bear set is a hefty 50 pounds.)
