I got this for skiing last season. I get hot when skiing, but get cold on long lift rides or eating lunch outdoors. The Venture vest is just the ticket. The vest is soft fleece which I wear as a mid-layer under a hard shell. The controls are in the battery pack which is kept in the left hand pocket. I only use the heat when I need it and it lasts the whole day (on high for approx 1 hour total time). Trying to access the controls is a pain because I have to get into the zipped left pocket under my shell (I wish the controls were on the exterior chest like their other vest). The 3 heating pads get noticeably warm on high, but not too hot. On low I can just barely feel it. Sizing is generous. I am 5'10", 190 lbs, 42" chest, 36" waist and I wear a medium (relaxed fit). I could probably wear a small if I wanted a tight snug fit.

I also tried Venture's City Vest which is the same idea, but soft shell fabric and a control button is located exterior left chest. The controls are much more convenient to access. The fabric is more water/wind resistant than fleece. But the fabric is much stiffer and bulkier which makes it fit less well underneath a jacket.
